NATECLA Annual Conference: 7th – 8th July 2017

Conference news

Keynote speakers

We are delighted to welcome three speakers this year. On the Friday evening Melanie Cooke and James Simpson, both highly regarded researchers in the field of ESOL, will base their after-dinner talk on ‘Recognising multilingual realities in ESOL‘.

On Saturday 8th July, Rachael Roberts, well-known ELT materials writer, teacher, teacher trainer and blogger will open the day’s programme with her fascinating talk on ‘The Guilty secrets of the ELT classroom‘.

Booking and programme details

The new programme means that Friday delegates will be able to attend two workshops, the Teachmeet, plus dinner and our evening keynote speakers – all for just £39 for members! A day ticket on the Saturday is only £75 for members and the full residential conference is £149. If your institution is a NATECLA member then 5 people can attend at member rate.

Workshop highlights

There is a great range of workshops on offer this year – there should be something for everyone, whatever your interests and experience.

We have some excellent-looking workshops on developing your students’ skills across all areas: Judy Kirsh and Charlotte Haenlein will focus on pronunciation and Rachael Roberts on listening (‘Don’t cry for me Aunty Tina: using decoding to navigate listening’). There are also sessions with a practical focus on designing resources (Designing fantastic ESOL resources with Phil Bird), teaching teenagers (with Amy Urry), diagnostic assessments with pre-entry students (Jo Capstick & Ian Nicholls).

A number of workshops consider issues around integration, promoting British values and models of delivery which use volunteers effectively (Michaela Salmon and Nuala Trace). This year we also have a real range of sessions which are closely linked to research. ELT Journal editor, Graham Hall, will look at own language use in the classroom, while Dermot Bryers, Mel Cooke and Becky Winstanley will present findings from the ‘Our Languages’ project. On top of all these (and more!), there are also a number of workshops offered by awarding organisations which such as City and Guilds and SQA.

  1. Ann Morgan-Thomas and I are presenting at the NATECLA Conference this year. Our workshop is on Saturday 8th July from 1.30 – 2.30 pm. Our workshop will be looking at the learning, teaching and assessment materials produced by SQA to support the SQA ESOL: Preparation for Literacy unit. It would be lovely to see NATECLA Scotland members there!
