Here is some news items taken from the latest NATECLA Monthly Update.

Language Issues and NATECLA News

Many of you will be aware that after some changes to our membership packages earlier in the year, all NATECLA members will now receive two editions of Language Issues each year. These are currently sent as a PDF file and are also available through the Ingenta Connect website. After the summer, NATECLA News will be incorporated into the Monthly Updates and Language Issues. As we do this we hope that you can give us your ideas and input into how to make it useful, interesting and relevant to you. We would also like to say a big ‘thank you’ to Mike Harrison for all his work on NATECLA News over a number of years.


Chairs’ report: Members’ survey

During May we have been studying the results of the survey, which so many of you took time to complete during the Easter break. It has given us valuable information on the profile of our members and we will be working to promote NATECLA to the groups which are under-represented, particularly younger people and those from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds. We also note that, while the majority of members are on permanent contracts, a significant proportion are on zero hours and there is still a lot of job insecurity in the sector.

The survey showed that the main benefits of belonging to NATECLA were for CPD, to find out information and to have a voice. From comments received, however, we realise that we need to do more to highlight other benefits, such as the opportunity to attend other organisations’ conferences at member rate, job vacancies and teaching resources. We will be adding three more sections to the teaching resources section this summer, so that, in addition to links to useful websites, you’ll have a collection of tips on classroom management and what to keep in a teacher’s toolbox, as well as FAQs. Many thanks to delegates at the London and Midlands spring conferences who contributed to this.
Finally, we were heartened that over 95% of you support the idea of a strategy for ESOL in England, that a third had passed it to other staff and that many of you are using the teaching and learning resources here to promote it amongst your students and at a local level. Please continue to do this, particularly with your newly elected MPs.

National Conference 2017

  • Friday evening 19:30 – 20:30: Melanie Cooke and James Simpson, both esteemed researchers in the field of ESOL, will base their after-dinner talk on ‘Recognising multilingual realities in ESOL‘. 
  • Saturday morning 09:15 – 10:15: Rachael Roberts, a well-known ELT materials writer, teacher, teacher trainer and blogger will open Saturday morning’s programme with her fascinating talk on ‘The Guilty secrets of the ELT classroom‘.

Bookings are now open on our special conference page and all prices are the same as in 2016 and early booking rates have been extended.
You can
book and pay online via Paypal or request an invoice if your organisation will be paying.
Workshops can be reserved at the time of booking. This year, we have a new look programme with a chance to attend up to six workshops. Full
programme details are available to download and will be amended as more workshops are confirmed.
The 6 sessions are a mixture of 45 minute and one hour workshop sessions.  In short, we are providing more choice and a greater number of CPD opportunities to our delegates.

Teachers’ Conference on the Future of ELT
Saturday 17th June 2017

NATECLA members can still take advantage of the early bird rate of £10 (tickets usually £15) for this one-day conference, to be held at Regent’s University London.

Plenary speakers will include:

Gail Ellis: Helping children become more effective learners
Paul Seligson: Helping students speak
Hugh Dellar: Retooling teaching for tomorrow’s learner

The day will cover four main tracks offering over 16 themed breakout sessions: Teaching Young Learners; EMI & Multilingualism; Best Practice; Teacher Education

RaPAL Annual Conference Global Literacies

Attend at members’ rate for NATECLA members

The theme for this year’s RaPAL conference is superdiversity in adult literacies and English. We are putting out a call for conference contributions which address the spectrum of resources and challenges presented by superdiversity in global literacies and in a UK context. Liverpool is a rich source of superdiversity and has indeed been a cosmopolitan city for hundreds of years.
